Much like Madonna, Sajjad Ali has constantly re-invented himself with every album he has put out. (Did I really just compare Sajjad Ali to Madonna?). He started of as a neo-classical ghazal singer, discovered mass appeal as a pop singer and then became more of a filmi/background singer. Now he has returned with his latest effort “Chahar Balish” which still contains his trademark addictive melodies, but finds him in a more somber mood. For me, “Chal Ren De” is easily the best song in the album, in fact it’s one of the best songs I have heard from the local scene. Its gentle, melancholy rhythm soothes the senses along with Sajjad Ali’s gorgeous voice, creating a heartfelt and emotional number, with beauty in its restraint. It is such a welcome change to hear a real song devoid of all the masala and the brain-numbing synthesizers. Surprisingly Sajjad also resurrects his cult-classic hit “Bolo Bolo”. To be honest, I don’t think this song would have been that popular if it hadn’t been covered by the likes of EP and several underground bands, sometimes with tongue-firmly-in-cheek. Overall, the album is an understated effort which I appreciate. But I felt it lacked that special edge which was present in 1996’s Chief Saab. Either way, for long time fans, this is something you don’t want to miss. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
